April 29, 2011

On March 10, the Orange County Youth Cricket Association delivered an American Cricket Champ set to Del Cerro Elementary School and trained PE teachers in cricket. The students, having fallen for
cricket, want to learn more about the game and be able to play more
regularly in PE class. One group of students completed a project on
cricket and viewed cricket highlights in class.
Because of the increased interest, Del Cerro's Mrs. Jean Cavanaugh
asked OCCA's Shantha Suraweera to demonstrate cricket to students during
a PE session, which was done on April 27. There were about 65 students
present at the demonstration, from which two teams were selected from
volunteers and an eight-over match was played. The children were
enthusiastic, had done some homework and even started questioning the
LBW rule (haven't we all?). When they heard that cricket may be a
showcase sport in the 2020 Olympic Games, the children realized that
there is a great opportunity to which to look forward.
Shantha Suraweera will continue to be available to the school for further assistance as necessary.
