MEDIA RELEASE
For Immediate Release: July 28, 2011
CMS to participate in cricket for 2011-2012
CHARLOTTE, N.C. - July 28, 2011 - The United States Youth Cricket Association (USYCA) announced a partnership with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools, which will become a model for the rest of the nation in their implementation of the USYCA Schools Program during the 2011-2012 school year.
USYCA, in cooperation with its associate member Charlotte International Cricket Club, will partner with CMS to supply their 136 elementary and middle schools with free cricket sets, instruction and ongoing support. CMS will incorporate cricket into the Physical Education curriculum, while also providing other opportunities for students to play the game, such as in recess or after-school programs.
USYCA will also explore the possibilities for sponsored cricket activities between individual Charlotte-Mecklenburg schools, as well as other extra-curricular opportunities for CMS students.
In addition, USYCA will approach local community leaders to establish cricket programs in neighborhoods, especially in locations where the need for youth athletics is great. It is hoped that under-utilized playing fields might become sites for low-cost, introductory cricket leagues that can attract children who might otherwise have limited team sports alternatives.
"USYCA is excited to be working with Charlotte-Mecklenburg Schools on this groundbreaking initiative," USYCA President Jamie Harrison said. "The USYCA Schools Program is dedicated to bringing cricket to American children in their schools and in their neighborhoods, and we look forward to this comprehensive introduction of our great game in western North Carolina."
"CMS is proud to be working with the USYCA on this impressive initiative," health and physical education specialist Matt Belles said. "Our teachers can use these new and innovative techniques to impact physical education outcomes. This opportunity also continues our mission for inter-disciplinary studies and will look to increase community involvement."
The United States Youth Cricket Association introduces cricket to American children by donating cricket sets to schools and youth athletic organizations. USYCA supports local youth cricket organizations and shares funding, printed and digital resources, and "best practices." USYCA adds value to the local community by promoting an active lifestyle for all children through the playing of cricket.
